Teraflop to Petaflop – Computational ScienceThe current generation of supercomputers, specially at the national centers of many countries, have peak performance ranging from hundreds of teraflops to petaflops. In the near future there will be supercomputer(s) which will attempt to achieve sustained petaflop performance on certain scientific applications. In this talk we will first briefly look into the history of supercomputers and the peak performance trends that are resulting in the development and availability of these petaflop level supercomputers. Next we will describe few scientific applications which have the potential to take advantage of these teraflop-petaflop range machines to do breakthrough science. We will also look into an application where GPUs have potential to significantly impact clinical therapy. We will conclude by describing few research projects which will make utilization of these powerful super computers more efficient. |
