"HPC and Cloud Computing"

Cloud Computing received significant attention in media, industry, and research. The advantages of virtualization, namely flexibility and ease of use, allowed a new wave of automation that provides access to huge amount of storage and computing power on demand as a service model. Amazon was a frontrunner with its AWS platform which got many commercial frontrunners. The management of cloud systems is mainly focused on reducing the cost of ownership and exploiting the economy of scale which is supported by a clear business model with “pay what you use”.
In comparison, High-Performance Computing is mainly focusing on performance.  However, the need to provide access to HPC resources lead to Grid Computing. It is foreseeable that the approaches will not live in separate worlds. The question is how Cloud Computing could be used for HPC scenarios and how Cloud Computing can benefit from experiences in HPC.  In this talk we will discuss the differences and the mutual benefit of HPC and Cloud Computing as well as an outlook for future trends in this area.
